Indian-Scented Yams

Super simple and so tasty.  There’s not even a back story involved with this recipe other than the fact that I wanted to use up the lone yam in the fridge.

Indian-Scented Yams

  • 1 large yam, peeled and cubed
  • Olive oil, drizzle
  • 1 – 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • salt & pepper

In a baking dish, place cubed yam. Drizzle with just enough olive oil to barely coat. Sprinkle with seasonings and salt and pepper. Bake at 350 F for 30 minutes or until fork tender.

Yum.

    This would be even better with a real yam, Dioscorea spp. (I can’t find any in Saskatoon). They have a great, nutty taste, unlike the sickly sweetness of sweet potatoes. As you can tell, I’m not a sweet potato fan. I found frozen yams in the Pakistani store on 108th and Central, but freezing ruined their texture. By the way, I spied some fresh okra in that store.

      Ack! I stand corrected. Funny enough, my husband and I had a debate about what to name this post because I said sweet potatoes and he seemed to think it was a yam. Ah well, I guess I can brag that I was right. I don’t care too much for an overly sweet veggie dish myself, but this one wasn’t too bad. Reheated the next day it was definitely much sweeter. Would real yams (Dioscorea spp.) grow in our climate? Perhaps instead of monkeying around with okra I should have tried planting yams. :) Thanks for the heads up on the fresh okra. I drive by that shop in Sutherland often and have yet to stop in. That’s all the motivation I need now. Cheers!

    Now you’ve given me an idea! I think growing a yam will be my pet project for next summer :) I always love a challenge. I picked my first delicious okra today (just one pod, but there are several more that will be ready this weekend). They are just loving this heat. I’m torn between eating it myself and selling it to the little market store just as a test to see if people are interested in it…we’re heading there on Saturday to have my wife’s crafts juried.

      That sounds like a great idea. I hope it grows well. Jealous about the okra. I don’t even think my plants grew at all. Good luck at the Market on craft judging. :)
