Undressing for Animal Rights

Let’s get naked to show our support for animal rights.

Or how about not.

Today in Saskatoon members of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) from Ottawa participated in a pro-vegan demonstration outside a local poultry processing plant Prairie Pride Natural Meats.

The theme of this protest was to illustrate that all animals are made up of the same parts and all animals feel pain, so demonstrators were wrapped in plastic and laying on large trays outside of the business.

So I totally agree with their message. Animals feel pain and millions of animals are slaughtered so that humans can consume the meat. In the process many of these animals are cruelly mistreated as they are raised and up until the moment they are slaughtered.

What I kind of feel is a bit of a miss in today’s protest is the fact that PETA continues to think that the only way to draw attention to the message is to have naked girls catching the eyes of passersby. And the sad thing is, it’s probably true.

Another miss is the choice of the protest location. Prairie Pride Natural Foods is located in the industrial area of Saskatoon, on Millar Avenue – well past 60th Street. Not quite a location where you’d get tons of drive-by traffic of the type that may be swayed by this kind of message. Think: truckers and construction workers. Since they were from out of town it’s likely the location choice was not their fault.

Last year PETA did a series of protests downtown including one demonstration with women in lettuce bikinis and one where women were drawn on in a similar way to a meat diagram. Though I don’t agree with women using their bodies to attract attention – even for a good cause – the marketer in me says they probably did raise great awareness for a pro-vegan lifestyle because they were right downtown with more visibility to those who might actually really consider becoming a vegan.

So, that’s it. There’s my rant about PETA, nudity, marketing and animal rights protests.

You won’t catch me getting naked for PETA anytime soon, though I love what they do for animal rights.

It was a semi-naked man that was at Prairie Pride, a fact often overlooked is that both men and woman participate in PETA’s nearly naked protests.

You make a brilliant point Derek and thanks for pointing it out. I suppose it’s not usually the nearly naked men who attract the media attention as I don’t recall reading that in any of the local coverage of the story. As I am writing from a woman’s perspective I suppose that’s why I identified the women using their bodies to attract attention rather than also mentioning men doing the same. Truthfully though, I don’t necessarily think any person (male or female) using nudity to attract attention is the way to go. But I guess there’s no arguing with results. It gets people talking, doesn’t it?! :)
