Peanut Butter Carrot Dog Cookies

Peanut Butter Carrot Dog Cookies

I haven’t made my own dog cookies before. I am kind of embarrassed by that actually. I mean, I love them to bits, talk about them incessantly, and I spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Today I have a bunch of reasons to give this a try. Primarily that I have a bunch of carrots that I need to use up and I already made something sweet for us and we don’t need more of that.

A quick Google search and mish-mash of a bunch of different recipes and I came up with these dog treats.

Why make it gluten-free? Yeah, I know it sounds sort of silly that I make my dogs eat gluten-free cookies. There’s lots of information out there about using wheat in dog food and treats. But mostly the reason for my making them gluten-free is because I just don’t cook with wheat or gluten flours in this house. I wasn’t about to start just for dog cookies.

The other bonus is this is all human-grade food ingredients, and completely vegan. (Note: I don’t have an opinion as of yet about a vegan diet for pets.) The reason I mention that it’s human-grade food and vegan … is because I tried one myself. Seriously! And guess what? They taste pretty great even for people to eat.

These were a huge hit at my house! The only changes I made were using 1.5 cups white rice flour (it’s what I had on hand) and adding two generous tablespoons of coconut oil to the “wet” ingredients (which I pureed in the blender first because I don’t have a food processor). My toddler enjoyed cookie cutting and I love that he and the puppy could sample the dough without fear because it is vegan. Mommy, kid and pup approved!

Love the idea of adding some coconut oil to this recipe. I’ll have to try that too. I actually quite liked the taste of these doggy cookies myself. I’m glad they’re both kid and pup approved!
