I haven’t made my own dog cookies before. I am kind of embarrassed by that actually. I mean, I love them to bits, talk about them incessantly, and I spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
Today I have a bunch of reasons to give this a try. Primarily that I have a bunch of carrots that I need to use up and I already made something sweet for us and we don’t need more of that.
A quick Google search and mish-mash of a bunch of different recipes and I came up with these dog treats.
Why make it gluten-free? Yeah, I know it sounds sort of silly that I make my dogs eat gluten-free cookies. There’s lots of information out there about using wheat in dog food and treats. But mostly the reason for my making them gluten-free is because I just don’t cook with wheat or gluten flours in this house. I wasn’t about to start just for dog cookies.
The other bonus is this is all human-grade food ingredients, and completely vegan. (Note: I don’t have an opinion as of yet about a vegan diet for pets.) The reason I mention that it’s human-grade food and vegan … is because I tried one myself. Seriously! And guess what? They taste pretty great even for people to eat.
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 cup shredded carrot
- ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 cup brown rice flour
- ½ cup sorghum flour
- 1 cup rolled oats
- ¼ cup natural peanut butter
- ⅛ cup water, or more as needed
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Combine all ingredients in the work bowl of your food processor.
- Pulse until all combined, adding more water as needed.
- Roll out on a floured surface to about ¼” thick.
- Cut out with cookie cutters in various shapes.
- Place gently on a parchment lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 25 minutes until cookies are crunchy and very lightly browned.
- Let cool and store in an airtight container.
